Stereotyping

Wednesday at Identity we talked about the harmfulness of stereotyping. We Peers put on a skit that was pretty hilarious, if I do say so myself :) and afterwards we played a matching game, where we had to match a typeof person with a stereotype.  The first group to get them “right,” got first dibs on the candy.  While the presentation of stereotypes was funny because they where not directed towards anyone, stereotypes are still harmful.  Unfortunately, I speak from experience.  People have constantly stereotyped me as nieve just because of my age.  When I came out as being gay to my sister at fifteen, she told me that I was just going through a phase because I was just too young to know who I was yet.  As it turns out I was right, and I’ve been proud of myself ever since.  The truth is we all subconsciously try to classify people we see, it’s completly normal, but when we use our observations to generalize an entire group of people, they become hurtful, and just plain inaccurate.  If people could be so easily defined, then we wouldn’t have this wonderful thing we call identity. ^_^
